Female Pattern Baldness
WEB EXTRA: What it is and what can be done.
Dr. Harvey Handler's practice is at the Medical Office Building at Flower Hospital in Sylvania. He says women's Rogaine has 2 percent minoxidil, and Rogaine for men has 5 percent minoxidil. He says in his patients over 45 years old, he'll recommend using the male version because those women tend to do better with the 5 percent solution.
Handler also says:
He always recommends name brand Rogaine versus the generic version. He says while the ingredients are the same, the vehicle is different. In other words, the way the Rogaine is carried into your scalp is different. He says the difference in price is negligible.
The cost of treating with name-brand Rogaine is very reasonable. He estimates it's under $100 a year for women because they only apply it once a day.
How well Rogaine works for you depends on how old you are, how much hair loss there is, and how long it's been there.
Typically, he says, he'll do a full battery of tests on women who come to him with hair loss because sometimes there's an underlying medical condition causing the hair loss. The tests he orders include blood count, glucose, thyroid, iron, and possibly hormone tests. More.
